Out of the Past 2024 / The Taking / USA 2021
Alexandre O. Philippe is known for his illuminating and captivating excursions into film history. Fans of cinema will thus surely enjoy his extraordinary exploration of American mythology with an eye to the breathtaking Monument Valley and the way in which the autonomous Navajo Nation has been portrayed in film and advertising ever since John Ford’s Stagecoach. In fact, Philippe devotes much of his film to Ford’s work, which is so closely associated with the legendary valley. Mixing admiration with ruthless revisionism, Philippe looks at the role of the landscape in the conquest of the American West, interpretations of which oscillate between celebrating the myth of the brave white settler and acknowledging the genocide committed against the native population.
