Ilie Năstase was a true Player with a capital P. Sometimes a clown, sometimes a boor. A breaker of women’s hearts. The documentary film Nasty, which premiered this year at Cannes, artfully intersperses personal interviews, including with Năstase himself, with a wealth of period footage featuring dramatic exchanges – of balls as well as words. One of the first tennis superstars, a force of nature that the world of tennis was not prepared for in the early 1970s. Cunning, bursts of anger, nonchalance – the energy that Nasty brought to each of his matches resonates on the Grand Slam courts to this day.
