Edmond Burke, a successful businessman, is walking home from work along the street of an unnamed urban metropolis. When a fortune-teller tells him: “You are not where you belong,” these words start to echo in his mind and determine all his subsequent actions. Arriving home, Edmond starts arguing with his wife, he tells her he has never loved her and leaves. But, as he soon finds out, his decision to indulge in life’s lurid pleasures is easier said than done. As he drifts through a series of back-street peep-shows and men’s clubs, he balks at the price tags on human merchandise. Yet, before the night is over, he will have committed murder… A portrayal of the madness of an average man who rises up against the mechanisms of society. Based on a screenplay by David Mamet, the film stars William H. Macy, perfectly cast as an ordinary man who is unable to come to terms with his inner aggression.
