Documentary Films - Competition 2006 / Uwe / Spain 2006
This highly original documentary portrait presents the German-born artist Uwe Grumman who, now over ninety years old and still active, is still regarded by some as the last living Expressionist. Like the artist’s canvas, the film image is also divided into fragments which live their own lives, yet also “collaborate” in an exceptional way.
The German-born artist Uwe Grumman, now over ninety years old and still active, is regarded by some as the last living Expressionist. He spent his life successively in Germany, Chile and on the Canary Islands. In spite of all kinds of obstacles, however, he never stopped painting. On his typical canvas, Grumman depicts numerous independent episodes in individual “frames”. The Spanish director conceives his highly unconventional film portrait in a similar way – his camera follows the artist in various situations, whilst the paintings speak their own language.
