Saturday morning belonged to the film Courage for Every Day. KVIFF artistic director Karel Och introduced the premieres of digitally restored Czechoslovak film icons to the audience: "Since 2011, the Great Hall has been dedicated to wonderful moments with older films and their new versions. You've seen films like Marketa Lazarová or The Joke," he recalled, adding that it was in this adaptation of Kundera's novel where director Evald Schorm also appeared in a supporting role.
Cameraman Ivan Šlapeta recalled the director's personality. "When we filmed the beaten and suffering protagonist Jarda, Evald was sitting next to me. The shot seemed long to me, but he waited and waited, and then he said to Jan Kačer: 'Now smile a little.' That moment touched me - it meant to me everything this film is about."
More was explained by the actor Jan Kačer, who portrayed the heartbroken Jarda in the film. “Before our film became a reality, it appeared as excitement and joyous inspiration, a charming explosion of freedom and creativity. I welcome you to the premiere of a pure film about humanity, about kindness and friendship. I welcome you for all who are here with us, here and there. Courage for every day," he concluded, receiving a standing ovation.
Digitally restored premieres are brought to the audience by the National Film Archive with the support of UPP, Soundsquare and Kučerovi family. You can also watch the film selection online at KVIFF.TV.
