The Tribute to Nicole Holofcener section at KVIFF will showcase three romantic comedies by the acclaimed American filmmaker. On Sunday, Holofcener personally introduced to the audience at the Pupp You Hurt My Feelings, a film that thoughtfully explores themes of stagnant marriage, motherhood, and guilt. “I think it’s hard for people at a certain age to feel like they’ve lived up to expectations,” the director remarked.
During the discussion, Holofcener shared that while the film is deeply autobiographical, none of the events depicted actually happened. “It’s about my fears, fantasies, thoughts, and curiosity,” she explained. Reflecting on her experience making the 2022 film, she added, “I can be very critical of myself, but I was surprised that I managed to make the film at that time.”
The audience was also curious about her collaboration with actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, renowned for her role in the series Veep. Holofcener first met Louis-Dreyfus before filming Enough Said, which will be presented at the Karlovy Vary festival on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Pupp. “We connected on a human level and even broke down in tears over lunch while talking about our sons. Years later, when I hinted to her what this film would be about, she was all for it,” Holofcener revealed. The warm applause following the screening underscored the audience’s strong connection to Holofcener’s work.
