The penultimate pair of films will enter the Crystal Globe Competition. Contemporary Asian cinema will be represented by Pierce, the world premiere of a gripping drama from the fencing sport. The story of two brothers, the older one fighting not only for the favour of his younger brother but also for a chance to qualify for the national fencing championship, plays out a great dilemma. The older brother returns from prison, where he was serving time for killing his rival, and insists on his innocence. Despite all indications to the contrary, the younger brother places unconditional trust in his older sibling. The gripping atmospheric thriller directed by Singaporean Nelicia Low will offer a nerve-wracking battle between the ideals of brotherly love and the illusions we project onto our loved ones from 5:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall.
Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was a painter, a visionary and one of the leading women of British modern art. At the age of 36, accompanied by several other artists, she climbed the Swiss Grindelwald glacier. Northern Irish documentary filmmaker Mark Cousins has made a film about this event and its impact, but also about gender, neurodiversity, and climate change. The world premiere of A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things will take place in the Grand Hall at 8:00 p.m. This powerful film will make the audience feel as if they were seeing the world through the protagonist’s eyes.
