What is the connection between the episodes taking place in hotel rooms and the story of a girl with green hair and green blood? The fact that their film adaptations are entering the Proxima Competition today.
The episodic film Stranger, making its global debut at the Municipal Theatre at 4:00 p.m., unfolds in a hotel, a place where everyone is a stranger. Each take equals one episode and each shot equals one distinct story – some are absurd, others are darkly humorous, touching, or mysterious. All the stories are linked by China, the birthplace of both the protagonists and the director Zhengfan Yang. He drew inspiration from his own experience in a Hong Kong hotel, where a murder and a suicide occurred during his stay. At the same time, hotel rooms symbolise, for him, the uprootedness of our times. In his fourth feature film, the filmmaker, who has been working and living alternately in China and the USA since 2015, explores the idea of home, but also isolation and loneliness.
Maia is the heroin of the Italian film Chlorophyll. She has green hair and green blood; she is restless and longs for nature. That’s why she takes a job on a farm where she meets Teo, the first person with whom she can be herself. Director Ivana Gloria, who studied directing in Milan and now lives in Rome, sees her feature debut as a film about understanding the self and finding one’s place in the world. She presents the story as a fantasy, using sound and colourful images to capture Maia’s emotions from different perspectives. Let yourself be absorbed by them during the film’s international premiere beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Municipal Theatre.
